Does a higher Domain Authority mean more traffic? What 44,287 sites show

Yes, roughly. Across 44,287 sites, every 10 DA points went with about 3× more Google traffic. But sites with similar DA often differ tenfold.

Domain Authority vs traffic

Yes, but only roughly. Across the 44,287 sites we studied, every 10 points of Domain Authority (DA) went with about three times as much Google traffic. Yet sites with similar DA often differ tenfold, so DA tells you a site's rough size, not its traffic.

DA is Moz's score from 1 to 100 for how well a domain is likely to rank, based mostly on its links. Its correlation with Google traffic in our study is 0.79, where 1 would mean the two always line up and 0 would mean no link at all. That shows the two go together, not that raising your DA brings more traffic.

Every 10 DA points go with about 3 times the traffic

A chart of 1,000 websites: the higher the Domain Authority, the more organic visits, from about 1,000 a month for DA 1–10 to about 35 million for DA 91–100.
Each dot is a website. We picked these 1,000 so their mix of DA and topics matches all 44,287. The line shows the typical site in each band of 10 DA points. On this log scale, each labelled step up is ten times more visits.

The typical site with a DA of 1 to 10 gets about 960 visits a month. With a DA of 91 to 100, it gets about 35 million. Notice how wide the band of dots is at every DA: that spread is why DA can't tell you one site's traffic.

See what traffic is typical for your DA

Find your DA band in the table and compare your site with the typical site in it. The figures are estimates of Google organic visits, not analytics data, so compare them with an estimate for your site, not with your own analytics. The middle half leaves out the top and bottom quarter of sites in each band, so half the sites in a band fall inside it.

If your site sits below the middle half for its DA, most sites with your DA get more search traffic than you do. Pick a few of them in your topic and look for the keywords they rank for that you don't. Our website traffic checker gives you that estimate for any domain, with the top keywords and pages behind it.

The link is closer in some topics than others

DA and traffic go together in every topic we checked, but not equally. Government sites follow DA most closely, at 0.88. Adult sites follow it least, at 0.36.

Correlation between DA and traffic per topic, from 0.88 for Government & Law to 0.36 for Adult Content.
Correlation between DA and traffic in each topic with at least 300 sites, grouped by our own topic classification. 1 would mean DA and traffic always line up.

Finance sits low, at 0.65, because of the betting and lottery sites we classify there. They're one in eight Finance sites and barely follow DA. Without them, Finance is at 0.72.

Some sites get huge traffic with a low DA

Just 135 sites, or 0.3%, have a DA of 20 or less and still get over a million visits a month. Among them are betting sites, adult sites, and music, gaming and software sites.

Two tamer examples are chordtela.com, a guitar chords site with a DA of 17 and about 100 million visits a month, and english-bangla.com, a dictionary with a DA of 18 and about 48 million. They answer huge everyday demand, and few sites link to them.

Why a higher DA won't necessarily bring more traffic

DA is tuned to predict Google rankings, and our traffic estimate is built from those rankings. So part of the link between the two is built in: a site that ranks well gets a high traffic estimate, and DA is designed to score that site high too. A study like this one can show that the two move together, not which one drives the other.

How we measured

  • Domains: all 44,287 normal domains, like example.com, in our database that have both a DA and a traffic estimate. These are sites people researched in an SEO tool, so they aren't a random sample of the web.
  • Traffic: our estimate of monthly Google organic visits worldwide, averaged over May 2025 to April 2026. It's built from the keywords a site ranks for and their search volume, so it's an estimate, not analytics data.
  • DA: values from January to October 2026. We rechecked the 2,343 sites most likely to have changed, mostly small ones, and the correlation stayed the same.
  • Correlation: Spearman's, which compares the order of sites, not raw visit counts. Otherwise a few giant sites would decide the result.
  • Other choices: reasonable alternatives, such as one month of traffic instead of twelve, give a correlation between 0.75 and 0.80.
